UNIDENTIFIED DOE | Opelika’s Baby Jane Doe

Baby Jane Doe is the name given to an unidentified girl who is aged between 4 and 7 years old. Her body was first discovered on January 28th, 2012, when the son of a resident in Brook Haven Trailer Park in Opelika, Alabama, found a small skull behind her home. Police officers secured the scene, and Investigators were brought to examine the remains. The skull was described as little, and had small hairs on it, with teeth still present. The resident said that the skull was not in her yard the day before.

The investigators conducted a search of the area but did not find any bones until January 30th, when they discovered additional remains which were located around 20 to 50 yards away from where the small skull was discovered. It took time to uncover the additional remains due to the thickness of the brush covering it. The bones were also discovered nearby to a long-sleeve pink shirt with heart buttons and a ruffled neckline.

Several different pictures of what the girl might have possibly looked like have been released by police, and the photos include 3D models and sketches such as the following:

Through forensic testing, investigators have determined that the girl was murdered and that prior to her death she had suffered long-term physical abuse and was malnourished, and she could have easily spent her entire life in captivity. Through forensic isotope testing, it has been determined that the girl was from Alabama or a neighboring state. The state of her remains has also indicated to investigators that she was murdered between 2010 and 2012. Lab testing also revealed that the girl was an African American child and that she was aged between 4 and 7 years old.

Investigators believe that the child’s murderer lived in the trailer park that her remains were found in. They believe this because the park is not an area which an outsider would stumble upon and dump a body at. Investigators are not certain whether or not the pink shirt found next to the girl’s remains belonged to her, but they have included it in several photographs, such as the 3D model, under the assumption that it did belong to the girl. The police have stated that they have the girl’s DNA, and they only need something to compare it to.

On September 29th, 2016 there was a major development in the case when it was revealed that the young girl possibly went to Vacation Bible School at Greater Peace Church in 2011, and they had uncovered pictures of the girl they suspect of being the Baby Jane Doe:

The young girl pictured in the photograph has a deformity in her left eye, which indicates that the girl was blind in at least one of her eyes. Police are uncertain whether or not the deformity was natural, or the result of an accident or abuse. She was described as not very clean and had a slightly unkempt appearance. She was also described as quiet, she often kept to herself and didn’t interact with other children very much, she also had trouble communicating on the same level with other children.

Police have stated that they can begin holding the murderer accountable once they identify the child, but her identity still remains unknown. Investigators continue to ask the public for information on the girl, and a $10,000 reward has been offered for information that can lead to an arrest or an update in the case. Anyone with information regarding the murder of the “Baby Jane Doe” is asked to contact Opelika detectives at (334) 705-5220 or call the secret witness hotline at (334) 745-8665.
